Captain Jimmy Early runs one of Panama City Beach's most popular inshore fishing operations, and for good reason. This half-day charter takes you into the productive bay systems where redfish, flounder, and spotted trout call home. Starting at 8:00 AM, you'll spend four solid hours working the flats, grass beds, and structure that make this area a magnet for hungry fish. Jimmy knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's got a knack for putting folks on fish while keeping things fun and relaxed. Whether you're bringing the kids for their first fishing adventure or you're a seasoned angler looking to dial in your inshore game, this trip delivers the goods.
Your day starts early with Jimmy at the helm, navigating to the day's best spots based on tides, weather, and what's been biting. The Panama City Beach bay system offers incredible variety – from shallow grass flats where redfish cruise to deeper pockets where trout stack up. Jimmy runs a well-equipped boat that handles up to four anglers comfortably, though this particular trip books for just one guest, giving you his undivided attention. The morning bite is typically the strongest, and that 8:00 AM departure puts you right in the sweet spot when fish are most active. Jimmy provides everything you need – quality rods and reels, fresh tackle, live bait, and even your Florida fishing license. He keeps bottled water on board, but don't forget to pack some snacks and plenty of sunscreen. Four hours on the water flies by fast when the fish are cooperative.
Jimmy adapts his approach based on what Mother Nature serves up each day. Live shrimp is the go-to bait for most situations – it's deadly effective on trout, redfish, and flounder alike. He'll rig you up with circle hooks and just enough weight to keep your bait in the strike zone without spooking fish in shallow water. When conditions call for it, Jimmy switches to artificial lures – soft plastics, topwater plugs, and spoons all have their place in the inshore arsenal. You might find yourself sight-fishing for tailing redfish in knee-deep water one moment, then dropping baits near oyster bars the next. The beauty of inshore fishing is the variety, and Jimmy's got the experience to read the water and adjust tactics on the fly. Don't worry if you're new to this – he'll walk you through each technique and help you feel the difference between a nibble and a solid hookup.
"Capt Jimmy Early is a fun guy to hang out with. Likes his job and his customers. We did not catch any keepers today, but plenty of catfish and lipstick fish. He stayed out an extra hour trying to catch more fish. Great time regardless... my kid now has the fishing bug." - Chris
"Captain Jimmy was very knowledgeable of the area and you could just tell that he was enjoying every bit of the trip. This wasn't work to him. He cracked some jokes, told stories, and made everything very easy for our party of 3. He was able to keep us on the fish and make sure a newly turned 7 year old was engaged the entire trip. He was very patient with our boy and treated him like his own grandson. We used live shrimp to catch some keeper trout as well as bluefish, lady fish, needlefish, and catfish. Then used artificial to get on some more trout. It would be a no brainer to book with him again if we are in the area." - Jesse
"I booked this trip for our 19- and 17-year-old sons, and they had an amazing time. Captain Jimmy was very easy to work with and kept us updated by sending photos as they caught fish. We'll definitely book with him again in the future." - Angela Wrede
Sea trout, also called spotted trout, are the bread and butter of Panama City Beach inshore fishing. These beautiful fish love the grass beds and sandy potholes throughout the bay system. They're most active during cooler parts of the day, making that early morning departure perfect timing. Trout hit live shrimp aggressively but also respond well to soft plastic jigs and topwater lures when the mood strikes them. What makes them special is their willingness to bite year-round, though spring and fall typically offer the best action. A solid keeper trout runs 15-20 inches and provides excellent table fare with sweet, flaky meat that's perfect for the dinner table.
Redfish are the heavyweight champions of the flats, and Panama City Beach holds some bruiser reds that'll test your drag system. These copper-colored fighters prefer shallow water with structure – think oyster bars, mangrove shorelines, and grass bed edges. They're ambush predators that cruise the shallows looking for crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Spring through fall offers the most consistent redfish action, but don't count them out during winter months when they stack up in deeper holes. A slot-size red typically runs 18-27 inches and fights like a freight train, making multiple runs and testing your skills. The smaller ones are fantastic eating, while the big breeders get returned to fight another day.
Southern flounder are the masters of disguise, lying perfectly camouflaged on sandy bottoms waiting for an easy meal to swim by. These flatfish prefer areas where current brings food to them – channel edges, drop-offs, and anywhere tide flows create feeding opportunities. They're most active during moving water, especially on outgoing tides when baitfish get swept off the flats. Flounder fishing requires patience and a gentle touch since they often mouth baits before committing to a full bite. Fall is prime time for doormat flounder, but you'll find good numbers throughout the warmer months. Their unique appearance and excellent

Redfish are the bread and butter of our Panama City Beach inshore fishing. These copper-colored beauties with distinctive black spots near their tails average 20-30 inches, but we regularly hook slot fish and oversized bulls. They cruise our shallow flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in 1-4 feet of water - sometimes so shallow their backs show above the surface. Year-round fishing is solid, but fall and spring produce the most consistent action when they're actively feeding. Guests love reds because they fight hard, eat well, and aren't too finicky about baits. They'll crush live shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures. Here's a local secret: look for nervous water or tailing fish on the flats during moving tides - that's when they're really feeding and most likely to take your offering.

Spotted Sea Trout are one of our most consistent inshore targets here in Panama City Beach. These silvery fish with black spots typically run 14-24 inches and about 1-5 pounds, though we occasionally see bigger ones. They love our grass flats and shallow bay waters, especially around structure during cooler months when they school up in deeper channels. Spring through fall offers the best action, with early morning and evening being prime time. What makes trout fishing fun is their willingness to hit both live bait and artificials - they're great for beginners but still challenge experienced anglers. The meat is white, flaky, and delicious when cooked right. Pro tip: work your lure slow and steady over the grass beds - trout often follow before they strike, so don't give up on a spot too quick.

Southern Flounder are the chameleons of our Panama City Beach waters, and they make for some of the best eating you'll find inshore. These flatfish typically run 15-18 inches and about 2-5 pounds, lying perfectly camouflaged on sandy and muddy bottoms throughout our bay system. Both eyes sit on their left side, which always gets a reaction from first-time anglers. Fall through early winter is prime time when they're moving toward deeper channels and feeding heavily before heading offshore. What guests enjoy most is the challenge - flounder fishing requires patience and feel since their bite is often just a subtle tap. The sweet, white meat is worth the effort though. My best advice: use light tackle and keep your bait moving slowly along the bottom - a bull minnow or live shrimp bounced just right will usually do the trick.
