Panama City Beach Inshore Fishing Charter

Captain Jimmy knows these Panama City Beach waters like the back of his hand, and he's ready to show you why the inshore fishing here is some of Florida's best. This 6-hour morning charter kicks off at 7 AM sharp, giving you plenty of time to work the grass flats and bay spots where redfish, flounder, and spotted trout love to hang out. Whether you're a weekend warrior or brand new to saltwater fishing, Jimmy's got you covered with all the gear, bait, and local knowledge you need to make it a memorable day on the water.

What to Expect on the Water

You'll spend your morning cruising the shallow backcountry waters around Panama City Beach, hitting the productive grass flats and oyster bars where these species feed. Captain Jimmy runs a well-maintained boat that handles the skinny water perfectly, getting you into spots that bigger boats can't reach. The best part? This is a hands-on experience where you'll learn to read the water, spot fish, and improve your technique with every cast. Jimmy provides all the rods, reels, tackle, and live bait you'll need, plus your Florida fishing license and bottled water. All you need to bring are snacks, sunblock, and maybe a cooler if you want to keep your catch fresh. Speaking of catch - Jimmy will clean and fillet whatever legal fish you decide to take home, so you can focus on the fishing and let him handle the dirty work.

Techniques & Tackle

Inshore fishing around Panama City Beach is all about finesse and knowing where to look. You'll be using light tackle and live bait to target these species in water that's typically 2-6 feet deep. The grass flats are perfect for sight fishing when conditions are right - there's nothing quite like watching a big redfish cruise through clear water before you make your cast. Jimmy will teach you how to work soft plastics and live shrimp around structure, how to feel the subtle bite of a flounder, and where spotted trout like to set up ambush points. The shallow draft boat lets you access areas where these fish feed without spooking them, and Jimmy's local knowledge means you'll be fishing the most productive spots based on tide, weather, and seasonal patterns.

Species You'll Target

Spotted trout are the bread and butter of Panama City Beach inshore fishing, and for good reason. These beautiful fish are aggressive feeders that will hit live shrimp, soft plastics, and topwater lures with equal enthusiasm. They typically run 12-18 inches in these waters, though keeper-sized fish over 15 inches are what you're after. Spring and fall are prime times when they school up in big numbers, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. Trout love grass flats with good current flow, and they're fantastic fighters that will make several strong runs before coming to the boat. What really gets anglers excited is their willingness to bite - on good days, you might catch dozens of them.

Redfish are the crown jewel of inshore fishing around here, and Panama City Beach has some real bruisers. These copper-colored fighters typically range from 18-27 inches in the slot limit, though you'll occasionally hook into an oversized bull that'll test your drag system. Reds are year-round residents that love oyster bars, grass edges, and shallow flats where they root around for crabs and shrimp. They're incredibly strong fish that will make long, powerful runs, and they're known for their stubborn fighting style. The best part about redfish is their predictability - once Captain Jimmy finds a school, you can often catch multiple fish from the same spot.

Southern flounder might not be the prettiest fish in the bay, but they're definitely one of the tastiest. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, lying buried in sandy bottoms near grass edges and channel drop-offs waiting to ambush prey. They typically run 14-20 inches around Panama City Beach, and anything over 16 inches makes excellent table fare. Flounder fishing requires patience and technique - their bite is often just a subtle weight on your line, and you need to give them time to fully take the bait. Fall is prime time for flounder when they're fattening up before their offshore spawn, but you can catch them throughout the warmer months. What makes flounder special is that they're one of the best eating fish you'll find in these waters.

Redfish

Red drum are the crown jewel of our inshore waters, easily spotted by their copper-bronze backs and distinctive black spots near the tail. Most fish we catch run 20-35 inches, but bulls over 40 inches patrol our deeper waters. These bruisers love super shallow flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines - sometimes in water so thin their backs show. They'll eat almost anything: shrimp, crabs, mullet, you name it. Spring and fall offer the best action, though summer mornings can be fantastic. What makes reds special is their power - they'll rip line and test your drag like few fish can. Plus, slot-sized fish make outstanding eating. Pro tip: look for nervous water or tailing fish on the flats during low tide.

Sea Trout

Spotted trout, also called speckled trout, are popular targets in our shallow grass flats and bay waters. These silvery fish with dark spots typically run 14-24 inches and 1-5 pounds, though bigger ones show up regularly. They love feeding on shrimp, small crabs, and baitfish around structure. Best fishing happens early morning and evening when they're actively feeding in 2-6 feet of water. Trout put up a solid fight with good runs, and they make excellent table fare with mild, flaky white meat. Spring through fall are prime seasons, but winter can be productive when they school up in deeper channels. My tip: work soft plastics or live shrimp slowly along grass edges - trout often hit on the pause.

Sea Trout

Southern Flounder

Southern flounder are the ultimate ambush predators, lying buried in sand and mud waiting to strike. These flatfish typically range 15-18 inches, with both eyes on their left side and amazing camouflage abilities. You'll find them on sandy or muddy bottoms in bays, creek mouths, and around dock pilings where baitfish gather. Fall is prime time as they fatten up before their offshore winter migration. What's fun about flounder fishing is the surprise factor - they often hit when you least expect it, then put up a determined fight close to bottom. They're also some of the best eating fish in the Gulf with sweet, white meat. My go-to technique: drift live bull minnows or shrimp on light jigs along channel edges and drop-offs.
